Protecting Species at Risk

Picture
CIER increased awareness of species at risk (SAR) issues and First Nations participation in actions to protect species on their lands through the Manitoba SAR Pathfinder Initiative (2005-2012). In 2011-12, highlights included a proposal writing workshop to help First Nations apply for funding for community-driven projects, technical training in biological data-collection on the land, and creation of a Teaching Kit on species at risk for First Nations teachers and youth. The SAR Pathfinder has been instrumental in supporting many on the ground projects including rare plant, bird, and reptile surveys on First Nations lands. This information contributes to First Nations’ land use plans to incorporate protection and recovery measures for species that are at risk. Their recovery will mean that First Nations ways of life, so closely tied to all plants and animals, will be strengthened.
