Keeping Fish Habitat Healthy
CIER developed the First Nations Fish Habitat Program (FNFHP) to help First Nations to protect and manage fish habitat as a part of healthy aquatic ecosystems. The FNFHP built skills, knowledge and resources for Manitoba First Nations to address regional and local fish habitat issues. Through the FNFHP, CIER provided research and information resources, educational experiences for children and youth, and practical training. First Nations members who are managing fish habitat gained knowledge and training in aquatic habitat assessment, sustainable cattle management practices, and water quality monitoring. Healthy fish habitat will mean that First Nations can continue to harvest the fish and other aquatic species so closely tied with their culture, traditional foods, and lifestyles.
