Gathering Indigenous Knowledge
CIER worked with a northern Manitoba First Nation to gather Indigenous Knowledge (IK) that will contribute to land use planning in their territory. Through one-on-one interviews with First Nation members, map biographies were created which created an illustration or ‘visual story’ of how the land is used for traditional activities and where important sites are located. This IK information will help determine how the use of the land may be affected by future development and ways to mitigate any negative effects of development. Documented IK will inform plans for protection of special places where people are active on the land and environments that sustain people, plants, and animals, so that they will be there for future generations.
