Canupawakpa Dakota Nation - Workshop One Participants completed their first workshop May 28-31st, 2019 in Canupawakpa Dakota Nation. They learned about waste definitions and types; solid waste management, diversion, recycling and governance; landfill sites and transfer stations; Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs); new and innovative ways of dealing with waste; what other communities in Manitoba are doing; and, built up their leadership skills. An Elder from Canupawakpa came and spoke about traditional teachings and how waste issues developed over time as new materials and ways of living became mainstream. Then the youth participated in a community clean-up. The waste coordinator and lands manager gave us a tour of Canupawakpa’s eco-depot, a place where community members can take and leave reusable items (such as clothing, electronics, toys, etc.) and it is also where the community compost bins are located. Then on Thursday May 30th the group toured the Brandon municipal landfill and recycling depot.
Acknowledgments Thank you to the following guest speakers and tour guides for making our first workshop a success! Chief Viola Eastman, Canupawakpa Dakota Nation
