Through a mentorship program established by the Canadian Freshwater Alliance, CIER is working with Fort Nelson First Nation in Northeastern BC on a watershed community engagement project. The community identifies themselves as ‘River People’ and have strong historical and cultural ties to the waterways in their traditional territory.
CIER traveled to the community in June to facilitate a planning workshop, where the workshop participants identified that to engage their community with the watershed they need to focus on the youth. To accomplish this, the community is planning a canoe trip in early August focusing on youth, but open to all community members. Since June, the community has been working hard to ensure a safe and successful trip that can be repeated for years to come along different routes through their vast and beautiful traditional territory.
